extreme lag spikes

Mr.Sir
Go to solution Solved by kb5zue,

I'm glad that you got it figured out.  The SSHD drives have been around for a while but I really don't know how long.  If you look at the fine print on the drive, there should be a date of manufacture on it somewhere.  The SSHD didn't really go over too well because about the time things got good, the SSD came out and that more or less smothered the SSHD.  They were an interesting idea but being bastardized the way they were didn't really go over too well with a lot of people.  That's technology for you.

If you were located somewhere close, I have a bunch of HDD's lying around in my stash of parts and I would give you one just to get rid of it but that's the way it goes.  But like I said, I'm glad you got it figured out.

BTW, the cost of SSD's is coming down so you might want to consider adding something along the line of a 2TB SSD to your system.  They really perk things up in the overall scheme of things.

Good Luck

I have an sshd, every time the 1 to 2 second lag spike occurs I hear it "boot up" like its doing something. I know my hardware besides that drives is perfectly fine, I can play csgo and it will stutter insanely bad.

So, what are the details of your hard drive again?  Really could use a bit more information on your system then just what you have here.  Full system specs would be a really big help.

Good Luck, take care, and stay away from the California fires.

That's some pretty deep water you got in your swimming pool there.  Lemme see if I got this right.

Drive C - Samsung SSD 850 EVO 250GB

Drive D - FireCuda 2TB Seagate SSHD

Drive E - Unknown  (I know you have one, saw it in here somewhere but it didn't indicate what it was)

Don't know if you have a cd/rom or not but if you did, it wouldn't rattle unless it has a disk inside running.  It won't run if it not in use.

Try turning off the machine and disconnecting the SSHD.  That way we can remove that from the equation.  Like the cd/rom, it won't rattle if it isn't running.  Again, process of elimination.

So we are down to the SSD with your OS on it.  Well, there goes that one.  No rattle because no moving parts.

Now we're back to the SSHD.  The only drive with moving parts so process of elimination tells us that is the problem child.

How old is it

How has it been used in the past?  Was it set up as the C drive at one point in time?  Are you the original owner?

If you disconnect every thing other than the Samsung SSD, does the rattle go away and does the lag go away?  Or does it behave like it should and everything is hunky-dorie?

Sometimes the way to solve an issue with our computers is to try and figure out what the problem isn't before we try to figure out what the problem is.

There ya go, got a couple of questions and a couple of things to try.  Let us know how it goes and then get back to us.

Good Luck

I moved a game, "terreria", to my ssd and unplugged my SSHD, it fixed the problem. I got the drive as a gift, purchased new. The rattle was the distinct sound from the drive and went away when I unplugged it. I played the game for a good 10 minutes, with no major stutters ( only micro stutter ). I usually lag every 2 minutes or so in that game. I do not have another drive, drive E is the SSHD idk what drive D is. Had the drive for about a year, it started doing this recently.

Good Luck

Glad that you got it taken care of.  But out of curiosity, I have never heard of a "non-existent raid drive".  That's really messed up.  Anyways, glad that you were able to figure it out.

Good Luck
