Hey there,

As I'm building a new homeserver to replace my old Microserver gen8 not fitting my needs anymore, i'm gonna repurpose the 16Go 2133Mhz HyperX that are in my desktop into the upcoming server (no need for ECC) and upgrade my desktop to 32Go as I do make music and some projects can hog the 16Go pretty quickly..!

I was thinking of 2x16Go 3200/3600Mhz (CL16?) but I'm a bit lost with all the references on what is the best choice.

Also my desktop still has a 6700k as I'm waiting for Ryzen 4000 to upgrade in few months, I'm pretty sure the new RAM will not run at full blast with the 6700K/MSI Z170 Gaming Pro but it should be fine waiting for the Ryzen.

So the question is : what RAM/specs do I need for audio production/gaming ?

Thanks !

You could just get a 3200 cl16/14 kit or a 3600 cl16 kit and that should do the job.

We don't really know how zen 3's imc performs and what's the sweet spot for it, so you could wait.

but yea at least for now 3200 cl16/14 or a 3600 cl16 kit should do the job. you could go with a 2x16 gig kit instead of 4x8 as bandwidth will still be the same (assuming they're identical) as there's only 2 memory channels on consumer chips and it will leave room for upgradability.

it technically can.

PC: Motherboard: ASUS B550M TUF-Plus, CPU: Ryzen 3 3100, CPU Cooler: Arctic Freezer 34, GPU: GIGABYTE WindForce GTX1650S, RAM: HyperX Fury RGB 2x8GB 3200 CL16, Case, CoolerMaster MB311L ARGB, Boot Drive: 250GB MX500, Game Drive: WD Blue 1TB 7200RPM HDD.

Peripherals: GK61 (Optical Gateron Red) with Mistel White/Orange keycaps, Logitech G102 (Purple), BitWit Ensemble Grey Deskpad.

Audio: Logitech G432, Moondrop Starfield, Mic: Razer Siren Mini (White).

Right, and about the choice, is there things to look at ? I'm checking prices and for the same 3600CL16 there's huge differences in price and that's not for RGB !

For example I see a 2x16 3600CL16 Gskill Ripjaws 5 for 192 euros and a Ballistix also 2x16 3600CL16 but for 60 more euros, is it just a brand/distribution thing and they're the same or anything else to be aware of ?

depends, i mean one could use different IC's like MFRE/CJR and one like the  Ballistix probably uses micron rev e.

But as i said, a 3200 cl16/14 or a 3600 cl16 kit should do the job, and i would personally go for a 2x16 gig kit rather than a 4x8 gig kit.

And you could also wait for zen 3 to come out and check how it performs with certain frequencies and timings and how the imc performs.
