3200 CL16 good enough for 3700X?

Gdourado

Hello,

I am currently planning and piecing together my new build.

For CPU, I am currently decided on the AMD 3700x on a b550 board.

In regard to Ram, I just don’t know.

3200 CL16 is at an excellent price at the moment.

But I don’t know if that spec is good enough for the 3700X or if performance would be greatly improved by spending more and getting better ram.

3600 CL15 or 3200 CL14 can be almost double the cost for the same capacity, so I don’t know if the added expense would bring better performance or if it would just be marginal at best.

The goal of the build is 90% gaming.

Thank you for your help.

cheers!

In most games, the difference between 3200 CL16 and 3600 CL16 is going to be minimal. If you can find a 3600 CL16 kit for a decent price, then go for it, but 3200 is going to work just fine for 99.9% of people.

Main PC:

AMD Ryzen 7 5800X • Noctua NH-D15 • MSI MAG B550 Tomahawk • 2x8GB G.skill Trident Z Neo 3600MHz CL16 • MSI VENTUS 3X GeForce RTX 3070 OC • Samsung 970 Evo 1TB • Samsung 860 Evo 1TB • Cosair iCUE 465X RGB • Corsair RMx 750W (White)

Peripherals/Other:

ASUS VG27AQ • G PRO K/DA • G502 Hero K/DA • G733 K/DA • G840 K/DA • Oculus Quest 2 • Nintendo Switch (Rev. 2)

Laptop (Dell XPS 13):

Intel Core i7-1195G7 • Intel Iris Xe Graphics • 16GB LPDDR4x 4267MHz • 512GB M.2 PCIe NVMe SSD • 13.4" OLED 3.5K InfinityEdge Display (3456x2160, 400nit, touch).

Got any questions about my system or peripherals? Feel free to tag me (@bellabichon) and I'll be happy to give you my two cents.

PSA: Posting a PCPartPicker list with no explanation isn't helpful for first-time builders :)

The Cas 14 latency would bring better performance, but we call that dimishing returns. More cost, but not so much big gains.

Either way, both sets are likely decent quality B-Die memory. They would fair well being tweaked.

Ryzen does extremely well with even number latency, but best if not lesser than 16-16-16-36 1.35v @ 3600mhz would be good too.
