Cannot enter BIOS - ASUS

Go to solution Solved by PorkishPig,

Try getting into your BIOS with your monitor connected to your onboard graphics.

I recently built a computer and am trying to enter BIOS to finish my overclocking. Here are the specs.

  • ASUS Z490-P

  • i7 10700K

  • NVMe SSD

Steps I have tried so far by googling.

I called ASUS support and they recommend me to clear CMOS to enter BIOS.

Any other ideas?

When you clear a BIOS some boards can be stubborn about it.
The little watch battery you see in it's holder is what holds the BIOS settings when the machine is powered down. If pressing the BIOS reset button on the back of the machine doesn't work, you may have to clear it the old way.

Here's how:

1: Shut down the machine (Of course).

2: Cut the PSU off with it's switch or just unplug it from the wall and press the power button a few times to drain the PSU. As to why - If it's still getting power to the system that will in turn make the machine "Hold" the current BIOS settings so it must be fully powered down/off. The battery is what lets it hold settings even when shut down or in cases of a power outage for example.

3: Remove the little battery from it's holder. If there is a jumper (Check the board's manual) place it in the "Clear" position/setting right after you remove the battery, not before. Leave it like this for about 10 minutes.

4: After the time has passed, just do the direct reverese of what's above and always power on the PSU AFTER you install the battery, not before.

As for what appeared while I was typing, it looks to be a windows issue BUT BIOS settings could be affecting it too.

If you can get into the BIOS you can try default settings and see if it actually boots or not.

If the drive config is wrong, such as if it's set for IDE or SATA as examples of this and so on, you could get the Windows login screen but then have it crash, normally with a BSOD and error code.

If it does be sure to note the error it's giving since that can be important.

I don't know if any of this will help but I know you can get a BIOS cleared that way at least.

What do you mean? remove CMOS and use onboard graphics?

Connect your display to a display output on your motherboard and boot. No need to clear your CMOS.

To switch from the GPU to the onboard graphics, that's what and all you'd need to do in most cases.
It's rare you'd have to mess with the BIOS just to get a screen to show by doing that.

So, I did this. I removed CMOS. Took out my GPU. I saw the ASUS splash screen and hit F2. Got into the BIOS, select AI Tweaker to Manual, set my RAM to 3200. Reboot to check it in Task Manager that my RAM was set to 3200. Cool, I'm done. Wrong.

Put my GPU back in, now my Corsair RGB ram isn't lighting up and my system is not posting. Shit, did I fry something? no way, 3200 wasn't overshooting it and I'm grounded.

I put in 1 stick into another ram slot and I got the ram stick is lighting up. Then, I move back to my old ram slots and now they're working just fine. Put my GPU back in, done. My GF asked me what I did to fix it when I got excited. I literally didn't know how to answer her. I just put shit in piece by piece without any actual software change. Computers are weird.

edit: I disabled fast boot in ASUS window so now I can actually see the ASUS splash screen. Before, It would skip it and go straight to windows splash screen that quickly.

Thanks for everyones help. been stuck on this for a week now.
