Hey.

I am looking for something for trading platforms. What I've noticed there is a lot of stress put on CPU. Would i9 9900k would be good choice?  What about motherboard and ram to it? 32GB is a minimum for my needs. Currently running low on 16GB.

.

Not sure what trading platforms means.  I assume this is some sort of app with multiple windows open?  Need to know the app by name.  If running a bunch of apps at the same time multiple cores will usually help a lot.

if it’s just one and the app isn’t multithreaded multiple cores won’t help.  Memory is separate from that. Most motherboards max out at 64gb though some max out at 32gb.  It is possible to get boards that go much much higher than that but requires a different socket.

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.

any thoughts on i9900k or amd 3950x?

My memory is a 3950 is near equivalent in single thread fps to a 9900k stock. But in multithread productivity a 9900k @5.3 OC can’t even touch a 3950. Kinda depends on how good a clocker you are, what the silicon lottery hands you, and what your use case is.

FPS doesnt matter because its not for games. I am looking for better processor it terms of handling everything other than games.

Assuming multithread (anything video or spreadsheet that is new) 3950. Hands down.  Like 30% faster.  If you OC well, AND You have single thread workloads (older apps) you might be able to get +5-10% extra out of intel. If you can’t or aren’t it’s basically even.

I should point out I’m the guy who was talking about threadripper (mostly because I don’t know a ton about your use case) threadripper would be faster in multi and slower in single.  Mostly with a whackton more memory space.
