Hello All,

I've recently upgraded my home desktop from this:

  • HP Envy 23" AIO
    • i5-4570T (Dual Core)
    • NVIDIA GeForce GT 730A
    • 8GB 1600MHz RAM
    • 250GB Samsung Evo 840 SSD (2.5")

To this:

  • Dell Optiplex 3070 Micro Form Factor
    • i5-9500T (Hex Core)
    • Intel UHD Graphics 630
    • 16GB 2666MHz RAM
    • 1TB Adata XPG NVME SSD
    • Generic 1080P Dell Monitor

My main concern about my new computer is the graphics. For the bulk of what I do on it (surfing the web and 3D Modeling), I'm finding that it is sufficient or better than what I need. Where I am getting hang-ups is when I try to game on it. I find that at medium settings, I can get around 30FPS max after tweaking in game settings. I'm not playing any AAA games or incredibly demanding titles, and I'm just fine with medium graphics on 1080P, I would just like to see if I can bump my frames up higher (and while not spending a whole lot of money).

So with all that in mind, I'm intending to use "the beast", like the one shown in Linus' video (https://youtu.be/GDyL2tPyXFA) hooked up to the M.2 WIFI/BT card slot, and a used low end graphics card (2GB-4GB Range). The conclusion of Linus' video was that there are really only very niche situations in which you'd want to use this, but I believe I'm one of those. Therefore I wanted to ask the group a couple of questions:

  1. Does anyone have any experience using an eGPU with a micro computer (or specifically a micro optiplex)?
  2. How easy/hard was it to setup?
  3. Are there better/more-conducive graphics cards for this application (AMD vs NVIDIA or even more specifically)?
  4. Does anyone know if there's anything preventing me from doing this with this specific computer (I haven't found a lot of literature about this on Dell's forums or elsewhere)?

Thanks,

John
