I never overclock a ram before, all i know about ram overclocking is if the pc doesnt post it means i need to add more voltage. I wanted to overclock my CORSAIR VENGEANCE LPX 2666MHZ (8X2) CL16 to 3000mhz. I currently running my ram on xmp profile which is 2666Mhz 1.2v So what voltage to make it running at 3000mhz, and what is the limit with ram overclocking is it temperature or stability or maybe some other things? Should I change the timmings when overclocking or maybe change something else.

instability usually like the imc not handling it or the IC's on the ram not handling the overclock or the board, or temps if you don't have enough cooling for it, for the most part unless you're heavy overclocking ram it shouldn't get to warm to the point where you need a fan or active cooling for it.

Yes, the basic strategy is to increase the speed until you get instability, and increase voltage and timings as you go up in freq. However, memory overclocking is not nearly as easy as other types of overclocking, and things can get very complicated and time consuming due to the shear number of variables which must be controlled. No one can tell you what voltage or timings or speed will be best for you and your particular setup, only you can find those for yourself. But as a rule, don't go over 1.45-1.5V for 24/7, and always prioritize real latency over theoretical bandwidth.

Well we don't know what frequency and what timings you'll get to, it depends, and every stick has different capabilities, it's a trial and error process, increase the frequency slowly and check what timings you'll get and what voltages are needed, just quick note, for the soc, don't go over 1.2 that's generally recommended.

If I were you, I'd start by loosening out the timings to something like 18-18-18-38, setting the voltage to 1.35V, and seeing how high I could get the freq before it gets unstable up to 3600Mhz. If I hit instability before 3600Mhz, I'd bumpo the voltage up to at most 1.45V to see if that helps. Once I found the max stable freq, I'd work on tightening the timings. From there I would reduce the freq down one step at a time, trying 3466, 3400, 3333, 3200 etc, until I found the greq that provided the best real latency. From there I would reduce voltage until it is as low as it could be while still stable, and that would be that.

Too much voltage, you can break your RAM or IMC, but if you stay under 1.2V soc and 1.5V DRAM you are good.

 

Other than that, if a setting fails to POST, you may have to clear CMOS a whole-hell-of-a-lot if your board does not have a safe boot feature.

 

So make profiles often so you can load up your settings more easily.

ok so whats is the easiest way to stress test the ram to make sure its stable?
