Rent decrease. How to approach it.

Hey.

I pay by myself $1624 just for rent not to mention other bills and cost of living here in NYC. I didnt sign any lease yet which expired 3 months ago. How can i approach super in building to ask landlord  for me for rent decrease. This guy here is kinda useless because he drinks all the time or smokes pot. My idea was to ask if i can pay less in cash off the books so landlord doesnt have to deal with taxes etc. For 2 years i was paying with money order while  having lease signed. For past 3 months i still paid the same way but without lease. Now being just on unemplyment without  extra boost is getting hard and i have to add from my savings. Not sure if my job ever opens where i made almost $900  a week after taxes.

I doubt a landlord will go for that under the table deal. Generally they want everything on the books so they have legal protection from shitty tenants, and honestly you should no what to do that either, if you have no proof of payment then there is nothing stopping the landlord from saying you didnt pay him and he could legally evict you for non payment and you would have no recourse. If you have been there for a while and have been an upstanding tenant then you could just explain your situation and see if you can get a break. Good Tenants arent easy to always find so some landlords will give breaks to keep good tenants in their property. I just got a $150 reduction and an upgrade to a better property owned by the same landlord because I have been renting from them for 6 years and they want to keep me around.

you asking how to do a deal that avoids taxes is like asking how you can commit a crime.  I'm surprised this post hasn't been deleted.

you should just ask straight-up; it's going to be a buyer's market soon, so just remind them you can take it elsewhere for a better deal, and don't do anything stupid.
