Can hackers spoof SMS messages to appear like a different sender?

Hey guys. Someone i know recently got scammed a considerable amount of money through internet banking and the way that it all occurred was rather unusual and wanted to get the opinion of those of you who may be more familiar with this field.

 

So a little background;

In my country, all major banks have online banking and its use is pretty much universal. To access your bank account theres usually a combination pin, biometrics, a SMS one time pin (OTP) and a token. Although not all authentication methods may be used at all times depending on the activity, at minimum you would need 2 ( Usually biometrics with a SMS OTP).

 

So how the scam occurred was when they received a SMS stating that there was suspicious activity on the account and that it was blocked for security. It also provides a number to contact to 'unblock' the account, of which they called without checking the authenticity of the number via online means. The key thing is that this scam SMS was received in the same SMS thread as the genuine bank (How i know this is genuine is because there were existing expired OTP from the bank in that same thread from previous online banking. Also during the call, the scammer did attempt an action which required an OTP which came in the same thread, after the scam message)

 

My question is, disregarding the mistakes which lead to the eventual hacking, is it possible for a hacker to spoof a SMS to pose as someone else (In this case, posing as the bank)? The problem is that when we receive these messages, we are unable to see the actual number of the sender, rather we only see the bank name. Would this have had to be a breach on the banks side, or something more sophisticated for a phone to think that the scam message was from bank?

Yes, no need to be a "hacker" to do that.

Not sure, I think it would if done correctly but don't quote me on that.

Yeah it's extremely easy and you can hire someone who specializes in social engineering and voice acting to play a role of someone to get what you want. Last time I checked it's like $33 for the service

Just tried it, it appears in the same thread. No, not a hacker, it can be done via a website that can be easily found on google.

yeah for sure. Despite the multiple checks and balances in place, if you put someone who isnt really fully cognizant of the context or ignores all the warning signs, it can all be bypassed easily.
