Will Raid Be Appropriate For My Build?

Hello guys :)

 

So, I'm doing a new build. I'm mainly using my computer for school work, editing and rendering hd video, gaming, surfing the web n' such.

So for my storage solution, I'd figure raid may be appropriate when rendering large files (I'm having 30 gb of music also that needs to be transfered to the build too, lol).

 

Now the question is ofc. ''Raid0'' or Raid1?

 

I really wan't the performance boost of 0, and I was wondering how big the chance is that a hard drive fails? I mean, none of my friends have had that issue. 

I know I'm making double the trouble cause I need at least 2 drives, but I could ofc. just back up my stuff with a CD.

 

What do you guys think?

technically, yes you will have double the chance of a failure with raid 0.

But as long as you keep a good backup you should be fine, though i would recommend a external HDD over a CD.

1 HDD:   if it fails you lose everything.

RAID 0: 1 drive fails you lose everything.

RAID 1: 1 drive fails you will have another drive as a backup. But keep in mind they are under the same load. So what ever may have caused drive 1 to fail may damage the 2nd drive too. Also you are not protected against viruses, since the same DATA is mirrored to both drives.

 

I would recommend RAID 0 and a third external drive for backups.(Don't keep your backup drive plug for too long though, especially if it is in a plastic enclosure. They tend to get warm and temperature can cause damage)

Yeah but I don't have the cash for another drive atm, haha. Thanks for the help anyway!

I see. Then you can go for RAID 1 for now save up for an external drive and when you get reconfigure the RAID array to RAID 0.
