So I'm very new to networking and I have been dealt the task to setup an access point for my family. We have an ASUS RT-N66U N900 as our router and if I understand everything correctly I need to now the WiFi-standard that it is running and the only way to know this is to go here and log in, however I don't have access to the login information since my mother forgot it. How can I go about doing this?

I don't imagine that your family changed too much on the router so it safe to say that since the router is a WiFi N device is it also using the N standard with WPA/WPA2 security.

But how can I double check?

Without knowing the login for the router the next best thing is using a program called InSSIDer. You'll use it to scan for the wifi networks around you but once you do you just have to find your wifi and check the security type and the wifi type (or as they have it the 802.11).
