You have no idea, I work in IT so taking my machine to a third party felt like a failure. But at this point its been months so I'm desperate.

Man Windows and part compatibility are such mysterys. Even their own customer support and people who have worked in the industry for 10+ years still have no clue what an issue is a lot of the time. Its just systematically rooting out problems and learning common problems by googeling 90% and trial and error 10% you can't find. We are all just people who suffered for days trying to fix a problem only to find out that you have to change some stupid value in the registry from a 1 to a 0 or pull something out and plug it in again, and don't want everyone to suffer the same fate. What do you think the guy in the repair shop does? Same thing, he just gets paid for it. No shame here :D

Definitely makes me feel a bit better, still want a working pc tho.

Yes, yes and so far no only on the second pass though

They take a while.  Negative on memtest86 isn’t  necessarily indicative of no memory issue though.  It catches the big ones but sometimes not the small ones.  If the second pass goes clean might want to try the one stick in slot one thing.  Sucks.  Takes days sometimes, though that furmark thing might make it go quickly.  If memory test turns out negative it’s down to weird shit, like drive connections or weird ass settings.  Only thing I know to do with settings is the nuclear option.  Back up the important stuff on something, clear cmos, and reformat.  Then install absolute minimum files for testing purposes and test.  If it’s clean, put stuff back piece by piece and test.  If it isn’t, gah.  CPU is exceedingly unlikely but if those don’t work it’s all that’s left.  You’ll have what amounts to a whole new machine.... weird thought: this is rare and old fashioned and so unlikely leave it till last, but if you’ve got something caught behind the motherboard or you attached it in a weird ass way, or something like that there could be shorts across the back of the board.  Really grasping at straws here.

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.

During the mobo RMA I had to reinstall everything, so while not impossible, physical issue is improbable. If memtest doesn't give me anything I'm wiping everything and starting from scratch. On a side note any benefit on installing windows on nvme vs SSD? I wanna put all my games with longer load times on the nvme and maximize speed

Yeah other than that maybe the graphics card is not getting enough power because maybe its not plugged in properly, or is only using one pcie cabel, there is not much left here.

You tried the power options already right?

Full reset and if then still, replace the sata cabel on the SSD and such things. Pull everything out and plug in again, thats pretty much all you can do.

If that doesn't do anything then it might be a compatibility issue and the ram modell isn't supported fully by your motherboard.

Did you buy your memory as a kit or is one maybe an older modell?

Thats all, those are like the last ditch issues i can think of after a full reset.

In games the diffrence between m.2 and sata ssds is pretty minimal, although it depends on the game. Windows on the nvme however is always a good idea. But unless you plan to do large scale 4k video editing or something the like, you are probably not going to notice the diffrence.

For games there’s a bit of an argument on that one:

nvme IS a ton faster than SSD.  The problem is sata SSDs are already so fast that unless your files are utterly huge (Like bigger than any video game) it barely matters... right now anyway.  After the games for ps5 start getting released that may change.  There are people who say that running stuff off nvme makes things “snappier” I can’t tell the difference myself.  Does it really matter if something takes an eighth of a second instead of a thirtysecond of a second?  In the future this could change though. Requires writing games in a different way.  The current method involves taking account for the low speed of HDDs but games are easier to write if one doesn’t.

I bought them as a kit, but yeah gonna do a full wipe today and install windows on the nvme with one game to see if that works. Memtest had no errors

I'll try windows on nvme and see how that works out

  • 1 month later...

So the issue was solved, as many of you had said it was bad luck and the replacement psu had a defective 12v rail that dipped below 10v under stress causing the system to restart. Thanks for all the help and input. I hope this thread helps someone else in the future.
