RX Vega 6 memory usage problem

Greetings, community,

I have a small but rather serious problem that I have not been able to deal with myself.

I have HP Envy x360 15-ds0000ur (6PS65EA) laptop, it is quite slow, heavy, the display quality is horrible and I feel like I massively overpayed for it, but that's only my fault.

The worst thing about it is that it has 2 slots of 4Gb RAM (total of 8, which is not that good in 2020) and because Radeon RX Vega 6 Graphics uses 2 Gb or RAM (as much as I really don't need, mostly gaming on this hardware is not an option) I have performance problems. My available RAM is only 5,9 now, which strikes the performance hard.

I've searched the web for a way to decrease Vega RAM usage to at least 512 Mb to free some RAM, but even HP support forum has no solution to this.

The only thing I've found was to adjust the value in BIOS, but my BIOS version has no such options available, it only shows the memory, but will not allow me to change the value.

HP forum staff commented that if there is no such option in BIOS - there is not way to fix this.

Does anyone has any ideas or other solutions to this problem?

I'm not sure that my laptop RAM is upgradable and since the warranty is still valid, I don't want to resort to this possible fix before it runs out to avoid voiding the warranty (also, it won't probably be cheap and I don't trust the quality of work of service providers in my city).

I have updated the bios to the latest revision from the official site but there is still no option available.

Why are you saying that? What are you doing on the computer that you are utilizing 6gb of RAM?

If HP is telling you there is not way to divert VRAM then there is no way to divert VRAM. It's not a normal thing people do.

Either way, yes the PC has user upgradeable RAM. It's not too hard to do and won't break your warranty.

Setting the VRAM amount will depend on the manufacturer (e.g. Acer, HP, DELL, ASUS, etc) and the BIOS that is flashed on the motherboard.

Some laptops will have the option in BIOS, while others, like yours, is locked to a fixed amount that the user cannot change.

Upgrading the system memory (RAM) should not void the warranty of the machine.

Chrome and multiple work applications eat up a lot, sucks that there is no workaround. Guess I'll still wait for the warranty to expire cause I'm not sure the store I bought it from will tolerate any such changes to the internals of the laptop (and it does not have quick access to RAM.

Thanks for the help anyway.

You almost certainly can just pop the back off the laptop and upgrade the RAM. It's completely within your right to do so and doesn't break warranty.
