Parts will be bought from local physical stores or from www.amazon.ae with a Prime account, but if I can find some components in the USA which will be cheaper with shipping (I do have an American Amazon Prime account and I am signed up with a couple of international shipping services with some decent shipping rates across several weight classes), then I don't mind doing that.

So I'm looking to upgrade my PC. Honestly, I don't need to, my current build is serving me fine for the light gaming and editing work I'm doing right now. Everyone's been raving about the AMD processors, so I figured why not go AMD? I was able to save a bit more money than usual during the lockdown and WFH, so this will probably be the only time in a while when I would be able to spend a lot of money on a top-notch setup. But, I want to make sure that I have a system that would handle any game or workload I might have to throw at it in the future. I am planning on launching a YouTube channel and a podcast, so will definitely be doing more editing work than I usually do. My aim is to:

  • Future proof by getting the best I can now
  • Get better gaming performance (plan on getting the 48-inch LG CX TV as a main display, so would be nice to get 120 fps at 4K on that)
  • Get faster render times

Once I upgrade, I plan to tinker around with my current PC, take it apart and put it back together as a hands-on way to learn building PCs on my own. It will then probably go to my dad to use for work.

I still haven't grasped PC building (regardless of how many times I've watch Linus and team do it), so I attempted a build based on the basic knowledge I have but I'm not sure on what better choices would have been. Here's what I've assembled:

PCPartPicker Part List: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/83cvBZ

CPU: AMD Ryzen 9 3950X 3.5 GHz 16-Core Processor
CPU Cooler: Noctua NH-U12S chromax.black 55 CFM CPU Cooler
Motherboard: Asus ROG Crosshair VIII Hero (WI-FI) ATX AM4 Motherboard
Memory: Corsair Vengeance LPX 64 GB (2 x 32 GB) DDR4-4000 CL18 Memory

Storage: Western Digital Green  240 GB 2.5" Solid State Drive (From old build) - OS

Storage: Western Digital Black NVMe 1 TB M.2-2280 NVME Solid State Drive - For games
Storage: Samsung 970 Evo 1 TB M.2-2280 NVME Solid State Drive - For creative work (including Adobe install)
Storage: Western Digital Blue 2 TB 3.5" 5400RPM Internal Hard Drive (From old build) - Downloads and storage
Storage: *Western Digital Blue 2 TB 3.5" 5400RPM Internal Hard Drive (From old build) - Backup
Video Card: Asus GeForce RTX 2080 8 GB ROG Strix Gaming Video Card
Power Supply: SeaSonic FOCUS Plus Platinum 850 W 80+ Platinum Certified Fully Modular ATX Power Supply
Operating System: Microsoft Windows 10 Pro OEM 64-bit
Monitor: Wacom Cintiq 13HD (From old build)

So here are my questions:

  1. Do I need to change anything in this build? Did I overdo it somewhere or miss something?
  2. Is now the right time to build a new PC? I know Nvidia is about to launch new cards soon, but now sure when that's going to happen.
  3. With all these components in mind, what would be a recommended case? I will not be building this myself, I'll have someone do it for me, but I need a nice looking case (no RGB-fest please!) that hopefully isn't monstrous, and down the line once I'm comfortable to start tinkering with it, I'll be upgrading it myself.

Thank you all in advance!

EDIT: Sorry guys, had the wrong PC Part Picker links, updated now.

Jesus, that was fast! Thanks man.

Do the new cards usually come out at the same price range? If so, then yeah I guess I should.

Noted about the 970 Evo 👍

To be clear, I'm talking about the CPU. The price may be a bit higher than what's currently in stock but should be the same ballpark.

ask me about my homelab

Oh yeah, should have noticed you meant that. If it's not too far off then definitely worth the wait. I guess I will keep this build handy until that time comes and see if anything else could use a change (and hopefully some price drops lol).
