Hi!

I built a new gaming rig in early 2020. (prob the reason it does this) Anyhow, my PC randomly shuts down every once in a while. On average once in 2-3 days. The crash is similar to pressing reset button on the case.

It depends quite heavily on what i am doing when it crashes. Most of the time it is when i'm playing CIV VI or Minecraft. It can do it while doing other stuff, eg. playing cs or watching Netflix

After it has crashed it reboots by itself.

When i log on to it and get to the desktop a cmd window shows up and disappears as fast as it came up.

To add insult to injury, in the start menu, it moves my icons and folders 5-6 rows down and leaves a that big empty space in the start menu between the first and second row of icons.

All the help is much appreciated

Sounds like a driver issue, update your windows and drivers, make sure you are using the newest version of AMD Adrenalin to get the up to date drivers for the GPU and Ryzen Master for the 3600. Checking for any bios updates is a good idea too as there is likely a few major updates for X570-p since the first of the year. You can get the bios and other main driver versions from the motherboards manufacturer webpage here.

Have you ran any virus scans or tried a clean re-installation of windows?

I do not own any anti-virus software, so no, have not done that.

Have re-installed windows

Do you have any good recommendations for free anti-virus softwares?

Sorry for the double post, but if you have already reformatted and reinstalled windows, I wouldn't be too concerned about any type of virus at that point, however...

1) do you have an active connection to the internet while you're installing windows and going through the initial set up?

2) what are you using for your windows installation media? DVD? USB? either way, ensure you have the most up-to-date installer from the official microsoft website.

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

With all drivers in check and a clean OS.. it appears that it may be hardware related at that point, whether it's faulty ram or PSU, you'll have to start removing ram sticks or swapping PSU's etc if possible to find the culprit.

I'm having a similar issue but with older hardware. What drivers should I try to update? The device manager shows nothing is out of date

Device manager/ Windows updater isn't the best way to get new drivers. It usually gets out of date drivers and sometimes can get the entirely wrong drivers. I would never trust it for more than just the basic drivers to use until you manually install the right ones. I don't know your system specs or anything but typically the correct way to get the right drivers is to go to your motherboards support page on the manufacturer website, that will have everything from chipset to wireless and lan drivers. For your GPU drivers you download AMD Adrenalin for AMD graphics cards, or Geforce Experience for Nvidia graphics cards, they are applications that will update the GPU drivers for you.
