I am making configuration for my work-from-home workstation, going to run Ubuntu 20.04 current specs are following:

  • AMD RYZEN 7 3800X
  • ASUS Prime X570-Pro
  • Kingston KSM26ED8/16ME 16GB DDR4 x4 - ECC RAM
  • Fractal Design Ion+ 860P 80 PLUS
  • etc (SSD, GPU, case, monitor ).

Currently I can see on Asus web site, that ASUS Prime X570-Pro supports ECC ram, but there is no suggested memory, Kingston KSM26ED8/16ME is compatible with ASUS AMD AM4 PRO WS X570-ACE, but that motherboard has lots of features I don't need, so would prefer to spend extra 200$ on more RAM.

Question - is it a reasonable configuration ?

ryzen does support ecc unbuffered dimms  unofficially, as for qvl/ suggested ram, any ddr4 ecc memory should work just fine, don't worry about qvl lists for the most part.

depends on your workload really, the psu is overkill for the most part, but i don't know what gpu (s) you're running.

so, sometimes I run the workstation 24/7 for some light deep learning or high CPU loads for data processing. Power Supply Calculator shows that I need 500W , but I want to upgrade to bigger GPU sometime in the future.

usually they're incorrect most of the time, but what are you powering exactly? but to answer the original question again, ryzen does support ecc unbuffered dimms unofficially, just make sure they're not buffered dimms.

currently it's

yea a 550w/650w is more then enough, and will be enough if you want to upgrade in the future.

but to suggest some, SP11 rmx, txm, AMP, bitfenix formula, and the ion+ are all good.

I want this one to last as long, so want to have some room

wattage isn't quality, all of these will last and will are good.
