Setting up Email server (eventually)

SkullAbyss

I am currently in the transition to dump windows on both of my servers. However, when I make the switch to CentOS; I want to create an email server. Something I can have complete control of. Basically speaking I do want to know what I would need in order to complete this project.

One of the things I want to do is make it possible to have emails come in from outside of my network and also I can send emails out. Say like for the Domain name, would I have to buy it or could I just make it. My email want to get up and running would be like this: dj@skullabyss.com. I am doing research on the different security risks right now. It would be a very good project to complete. I really want to expand the capabilities of my home network.

You need to buy a domain name from a registrar, but then when you have it you can use it for whatever you like and and set lots of subdomains up as well as email addresses.

An easy way is to get microsoft to do it for you :P You can get a "microsoft account enabled" email (with the rest of the functionality) from domains.live.com i think, then you can make as many emails with that domain.

Actually making the mail server is another thing, but you'll learn a lot more by doing so.

Varies by TLD / etc. Google around a little and search for coupon codes and stuff. With the right coupons it shouldn't cost anymore then $10 really.

You also need to make sure your ISP doesn't block certain ports; such as 25. Most ISPs will block these ports to prevent spammers.

$10 on go daddy most of the time. But as was said I assume that if you are not using a business connection your is is most likely blocking port 25.

Most service providers that provide Static IPs can typically have port 25 unblocked on request.

Most won't, i have seen a couple though. Mostly small ISPs, and only by request.
