Internet slower with new router

kpwoerth

So I recently upgraded my router, as I had been using the basic modem/router my internet provider installed 5-6 years ago. I was looking at some reviews and purchased the Nighthawk AX4. I switched my TV Ethernet cables to it and used the Ethernet cable that came with it to connect it to my existing modem/router. I am not sure if that is correct but it seemed to work. For a few days everything was fine, but now it just stops working randomly and the internet is even slower than before i upgraded. Also the new router is putting out 2.4 and 5g option, but the old modem/router is also putting out its own 2.4 and 5g networks. I am extremely confused and have very little networking experience.           .

I think I know what's happened here. Do you have an all-in-one solution from your ISP? Basically, it's a modem and router in one device. I typically stay away from these things, but then again I never did go with ISP hardware.

What's probably happening here is double-nat, and some other performance issues that can be caused by running multiple routers. If you are using an all-in-one device, there should be an option in there somewhere to run "Bridge Mode". This would in practice, disable the routing part of it and pass that responsibility to the new router you've installed.

Once you figure out how to get into bridge mode, this may correct your issues.

Could you post the model of your ISP provided hardware, and who your ISP is?

I have been looking and I cannot see how to put it in bridge mode.

Would you mind sharing the model of your ISP modem/router? I can try to look it up.

I managed to put it in bridge mode following a video on youtube, and there is now only one 2.4 and one 5g network, however it is still really slow. My desktop is just down the hall and can barely run youtube, much less play online. Its supposed to be a really good router based on what I have read about it.
