Hotspot Shield

So I decided to try out the "free version" off HotSpot Shield and for some reason once I downloaded it I would go to certain websites and my google chrome would auto download this file called "rt=ifr". I didn't know what it was so I googled the file and some websites say it's some sort of "virus". After that I decided to uninstall HotSpot Shield and it stopped. Can anyone help me? What was the file? Is HotSpot Shield safe to use?
