Hi guys,

I bought myself a Asus r9 290x with the direct cu II cooler for my birthday, I really like the card but it gets a little hot while playing games like batllefield 4 like 90 degrees and sometimes has framedrops.

Is this normal? or should I return it and switch to nvidia ?

Its normal to run the reference cards to run hot and throttle some bit, but not the DCU 2's. There could be some problem with it apparently the DCU2 290s were recalled for problems with thermals.

EDIT: Just thought of it, try switching it into performance mode, may make more noise but the temps should decrease. If they don't there's a problem with the card.

Did you try switching to performance mode like Imabigmac'd suggested? It'd entail more noise but should improve cooling. Living in the tropics, temps tend to be a bit high here, especially with the heatwave we are experiencing right now, so I had no choice but to go water cooling. It's awesome to see the GPU idling at 38C with load temp not exceeding 55C....

The Hawaii Chip really lives up to its name, given that Hawaii is hot, and the chip itself runs hot. The Chip was designed to run at 90 Degrees, hence the name. After all, how could a chip with 6.3 Billion Transistors in a 245mm Squared Die Area not be running hot.

Return it and get Tri-X or TwinFrozr because 290x DCU2 use heatsink that was design for the larger GK110. Hawaii die barely touches 3 of the 5 heat pipes. Overrated Asus.
