Want to reinstall Windows on Linux Mint but don’t know how to

microsoftsam

Hi

I have a laptop running Linux Mint and want to go back to Windows but can’t create a bootable iso unetbootin always stops at 34% and can’t continue with an ISO or downloading. The dvd I used to install Linux Mint originally had disc rot so maybe that’s why. Does anyone know how to solve my problem?

Do you have a Windows machine for download? Then:

Use the Microsoft Media Creation Tool do download the current Windows 10 Image.

Use rufus to create a bootable USB Stick.

Boot your PC from the stick. Remove all partitions and select the resulting empty disk space (don't create partitions manually) as target for Windows.

Download the windows 10 ISO file.

Download Etcher from https://www.balena.io/etcher/

Instructions on how to install Etcher on Linux if you need it:

Burn windows 10 iso to your flash drive using Etcher.

Restart your computer, boot from your USB and start installing.

I don't believe Etcher supports Windows 10 ISO's anymore on Linux due to the extra steps needed to make a bootable USB with Microsoft's images.

Stay away from UnetBootIn, it causes more issues than it solves.

Things you will need.

Steps

  • Open WoeUSB
  • Select The Disk Image ISO
  • Change File System to NTFS
  • Set your target device to your flash drive
  • Install
    • If WoeUSB fails, just try again. Sometimes it takes a couple tries. Sometimes when it fails, the USB Install Media works anyways. Just depends on where it fails.
  • Boot from your newly created Windows 10 Install Media
