I currently have a AN-110-SW-R-16, which is a gigabit switch with 16, you guessed it, gigabit Ethernet/RJ45/whatever you call them ports.

I want a replacement that can take a 10Gb input instead and can also be managed, and there are 3 options for this:

  1. Find a new switch with a 10Gb trunk and 16 1Gb ports (+compatible with my cable types because for some reason I have multiple types, +probably less expensive because only gigabit output ports, +has 16 ports, —only gigabit ports). I would need a recommendation for this.
  2. Get the switch Linus used when 10 gig-ing his house (++10Gb ports, -more expensive, -only 12 ports, which is all of the 16 that I’m using currently, but then I would have no room to plug more stuff in except on my router)
  3. Get this switch I found on Amazon (++10Gb ports, +16 ports for more connections if needed, —even MORE expensive)

Even though it seems the worst in my terrible pros & cons list, I was leaning towards the second option because I can always plug more stuff into my router, and it is about $300 less than the option 3 I found. Opinions? If you think the first option is best can you give any recommendations?

Thanks and stay healthy,

EDIT: Also, random question while you are here, do you need a WiFi 6 router if you have a WiFi 6 mesh network?

How many 10gb devices do you have now? How many do you plan on adding in the future?

I can’t currently give you a firm number on that bc right now I’m just devising a plan on how I could upgrade my home to 10 gig. As of right now, though, I only have a PC that supports/needs the speed (besides getting any 10gig to like thunderbolt adapters for a laptop or something). In my upgrade, my mesh network would also be 2.5gig, so I would need to run those two devices as well. Most of my family uses WiFi.

As for how many in the future, I can’t really answer that past my upgrade. Because WiFi is the main use in my house, the mesh network will cover most devices, and there may be up to 2 more devices connected via Ethernet. That’s a guess though.

If you only have one PC with 10gb now, I really don't understand why you want to kit the house out with 10gb. Unless you have a NAS or something for that PC to connect to, the 10GB is not being utilized. With that said....

Your first option. A switch with one 10gb port and all others at 1gb is the worst idea. Those switches are meant as rack mounted units with the uplink port tied to the network backbone. It's meant for high throughput of many 1gb links. Not what you will have in a house setup.

Option two and three really comes down to do you really need all 16 ports? At the 4 extra ports worth nearly $100 EACH port?

As for 2.5 wifi, How much bandwidth is your family concurrently using on a regular basis? Are you saturating your wifi?

I love overkill stuff, but for 99% of homes, 10gb doesn't make any sort of sense. Not at it's current cost. Just my opinion.

I couldn’t give you an exact number, but with one person watching TV and surfing the web while another streams video and texts while ANOTHER (and maybe two more) are uploading/downloading files and video conferencing, we are definitely saturating it, and we have had WiFi issues where someone isn’t getting a connection before...

Thanks, that helps a lot, and when you do that per port math, I definitely think that it’s too much!

I am not super up on the wifi stuff, but the 2.5gb is just for one port on the wired side. So unless you are going to wire existing wifi machines, it's not really going to help you much. If I was in your shoes, I'd go with a hybrid/mixed speed network. And being a fan of used enterprise gear, I'd find an old 24 port switch with 4 10gb and the rest 1gb. That would allow a NAS and primary computers to use super fast connection, while letting lower bandwidth stuff sit on 1gb ports.
