Does my laptop (Lenovo Legion Y540) support an external monitor with g-sync?

Go to solution Solved by Light-Yagami,

If your Mini DisplayPort goes through an integrated GPU before it talks to the dedicated one, then it's a no go. But if you have a direct connection to the dedicated GPU - I don't see a problem.

Hey,

I am a new member with a question. I did some research but I couldn’t find the right answer.

I would like to hook up my laptop (Lenovo Legion y540) with the i7-9750H as cpu and the RTX 2060 as gpu, to an external monitor with 144hz and g-sync.

My question is: Is it possible for me to run g-sync on that monitor when I hook it up to my laptop?

I have a HDMI output (doesn’t work with g-sync), a Mini DisplayPort and an usb-c output.

Thanks in advance,

René

It should be able to run G-Sync on your external monitor.  I don't see why not.  So long as you have a MDP/DP connection to the monitor and recent enough drivers it should be able to run G-Sync or G-Sync compatible (Adaptive Sync).

QUOTE ME OR I PROBABLY WON'T SEE YOUR RESPONSE

Yeah thanks! Do you know where I can find if that’s the case ?

In Nvidia control panel it'll show a picture like this, showing the connection from a GPU to the monitor. If you plug in the external monitor and it show a picture like this, you're fine (connection to the dedicated GPU - you can't see anything else cause this is desktop). If it shows that it's coming from an integrated GPU, then you're not fine. hahah.. That's the best way I know to explain it. You want to see your display port connection to show like it's connected this way.

Ah thank you! So if I understand it correct, I need to buy the monitor to see if it works or not. That's not ideal hahaha.

This is what I see now if I open the nvidia control panel. I don't know if you can do anything with it, but here it is ;) .

Hi there! I have the same laptop and it has only a dedicated video card. So I think it should work as the port can't go through the integrated card. Let me know if it worked for you cause I'd like to buy a display as well. 😊
