Crucial MX500 repeated failures

iainw

I am now RMAing my 2 TB Crucial MX500 for the THIRD time. The disks have been installed in a HP Omen gaming tower (I know! - it seemed a good idea at the time). I also have a 1TB MX500 installed which has given me good service for nearly 2 years now and is going strong. PSU is Corsair 850 watts. CPU core i7 8700 and GPU is RTX 2080 super. CPU and GPU temperatures are fine. I am using the drive to house a steam library and I was playing The Witcher when it failed this last time. When I removed the drive it was very hot!. The other MX500 which was not being tasked was fine. I tried the usual resuscitative measure to no avail (as expected).

Googling reveals lots of complaints of failure of MX500's in Amazon reviews.

Is the overheating a sign of impending failure or the cause of it?
Anyone else had these kind of reliability issues with the 2TB MX500?

I'm going to be getting another one sent back but I'm wary of using it. I have heard that Micron ship out 'used' units as replacements...

All help appreciated :)

Unless you've got a blow dryer pointed on the SSD or your board's or PSU's SATA ports/connectors/cables are toast, receiving three faulty SSDs in a row sounds pretty ridiculous.

if the ports/connectors/cables are bad enough do damage the SSD would I not have had performance issues?

I'm thinking that Micron are selling 'used' drives as new through Amazon and also sending them out as replacements. At least one review on Amazon alleged that the 'new' drive they purchased had someone elses files on the drive.

I have an MX500 and haven't noticed issues but I use it very lightly so that could easily be why if there are problems.

Solve your own audio issues  |  First Steps with RPi 3  |  Humidity & Condensation  |  Sleep & Hibernation  |  Overclocking RAM  |  Making Backups  |  Displays  |  4K / 8K / 16K / etc.  |  Do I need 80+ Platinum?

If you can read this you're using the wrong theme.  You can change it at the bottom.

I need this drive for gaming. I've got a 2TB Evo coming tomorrow. Not sure what I will do with the replacement MX500 when it comes - but it makes no sense to put it to work in the same way again...

Hmm, mine is made in Mexico according to the sticker.  I'll keep this in mind

Got 9 of 2TB MX500 from amazon for my QNAP, all are build in mexico... 🙈  the SMART was "clean/new" on all of them, didn't check for files. Will update if anyone of them fails. For now they all work.

Ps. I heard that amazon is sometimes sending used drivers for warranty replacement. But the one bought directly on amazon should be always new.

The first one was from Amazon but it failed after just over a month. Amazon then passed me over to Crucial / Micron for support and replacement.

At this point, I would petition Amazon to refund your money, if you have not done this already. I have never heard of this happening to Crucial MX500 drive, but usually if a SATA SSD goes above 60C, there is cause for concern.

yes, I will give it a try. It is nearly six months since the first purchase from amazon but here I am now two drives later with no useable product. Maybe they will be kind to me...

anyone know what my statutory rights are in the UK are in this respect?

the response from Amazon:

"Do not worry you can return it back to us and get a refund, in the meantime we will investigate on this product."

Thumbs up to Amazon!

Thankyou for your help :)

This is awesome. Congratulations on getting the refund. Personally, I would opt for the Samsung variant, such as the Samsung 850 or 860 EVO if you are getting a 2.5 inch SSD. I have found their performance to be a bit more reliable for me compared to the Crucial MX500.

Already got an 860 Evo - now reinstalling my Steam library for the fourth time (first was on a mechanical drive)
