I've been looking at replacing the Intel Optane stick in my laptop with a 2TB M.2 SSD. I'm looking at a number of options but I'm worried about overheating issues. My laptop doesn't have any real cooling for either the storage devices (SATA or M.2) and I've heard that the newest PCIE Gen 4 M.2 drives can easily achieve blistering temperatures even in your average desktop with fairly spacious internal area. But in reading up on the PCIE Gen 3 drives it seems they too can easily reach considerable temperatures if not properly cooled.  Not only do both PCIE Generations crank out a lot of heat but quite a few sources point out that it's worse the faster the drive, which is in turn affected with bigger SSD's. But some of the other configurations of this exact laptop (HP Pavilion 15 gaming) come standard with M.2 SSD's. So is it safe to risk putting an M.2 Drive of either generation in the fairly enclosed space of my laptop? Or should I avoid it to avoid cooking the other components?

As long as you aren't using to read and write to it under constant and heavy loads, it won't be a problem. I have an aero 15x with 2 512gb nvme drives for about 2 years now with no problem. And that is a thin machine with no cooling for them to speak of.
