So I just installed it on computer A and used the private key to link computer B.

However, computer A did not have to approve access for computer B: B had instant access.

So basically, I could just bash in a bunch of numbers the length of a private key and if that key is actually being used, delete all files of that given user. This doesn't seem quite right to me...

This is because of how public key cryptography works.

To send PC A a file, you should encrypt with the public key, PC A then uses the private key to decrypt the data.
And vis versa.

Now because you trust both PCs, you linked them with the same private key, so they can talk interchangeably on the same encryption key.

With a 128bit private key there are 340,282,366,920,938,463,463,374,607,431,768,211,456 possibilities for private keys, tell me... how on earth are you going to guess the private key with that many to choose from? :)

  • 2 weeks later...

Hi guys! I'm considering taking Bittorrent Sync to replace Dropbox, but I'm concerned about the speed and peers being online. I have a hosting service of 100GB, where I run 4 websites, but I never use all the disk space. Would it be possible to put one peer on that server, that would mean that there is always one peer online and I have a fast connection. Is it possible?

That should work. My home server always has all of the data for me but hosting one on a dedicated server would be better in someways worse in others.

But you need a VPS or dedicated server for that right? A usual hosting won't do?

you would just need to be able to install it on the server

But there is no way of installing it without root access. So only VPS or dedicated server. I believe it's  like MySQL, it's preinstalled for normal hosting, you cannot install it as a customer of hosting service. Am I right?
