Hello!

I am a CS student who just built my first PC. Apparently I am having some trouble setting it up.

I ran the typical benchmarks and everything seemed to be ok. Until I ran the Intel Extreme Tuning Utility Stress Test.

My CPU power throttles almost immediately.

My build is:

CPU: i7-9700F

GPU: RTX 2060S

PSU: EVGA 600W

Any help, explanation, suggestion would be greatly appreciated!

It seems to be running fine.

If the scores you got from the benchmarks you ran match up with results you found online then it should be good.

I don't have personal experience with that utility but I think it might just be showing you that you CPU is hitting the 65W power limit and that is why the all core clock isn't boosting higher.

Since it's a locked chip and 4.1GHz is already a lot higher than the 3.0GHz base clock I wouldn't worry about it.

I have not used Intel XTU in a long time, but I assume it’s reacting similarly to what prime95 does these days; the CPU sees it as a power virus. It’s an unrealistic load, and the CPU knows it and is trying to protect itself.

If the core speed is acting normal in all other applications, and other benchmarks are fine, it’s all good :).

There are ways to get around this in BIOS, but I would leave it as it is. When overclocking you can disable current limits and such, but there is no point. No real world application would cause this to happen.

Thank you for your answer!

I was further testing this issue and noticed that I also get power limit throttling when opening simple apps like Visual Studio Code, DataGrip and running SQL queries, is that also normal?

It would be great if you could guide me with the BIOS setup or further setting!

Sweet build btw!

Every motherboard is different, and the reason for this exact issues your having I am honesty not certain of. It could be part of Intel's temp and power limit thresholds, or it could be the mobo hitting a over current protection (which would be strange for a non overclocked CPU).

What mobo do you have? And are you fully updated to the newest BIOS?

Also, thanks! PC building is definitely one of my hobbies lol.

Sorry for the late reply, never got the notification.

My mobo is a Gigabyte B365M DS3H WIFI. I havent updated the BIOS, I am running a May 2019 version, there is a December update available. Should I update it?

I am really liking this, troubleshooting is engaging.

Its a fun little world.

I would, it couldn't hurt. Once we know it isn't that... we can go from there.

And it is fun, but can be frustrating at times lol.
