kinda urgent. Building a pc for a friend just general work pc, no gaming. Trying to save cost and use the old case he had and his old power supply.

Everything is plugged in, however I noticed his power supply does not have the extra CPU 4 pin connector for motherboard.

His power supply is half modular and I had an extra evga CPU cord and plugged it in. Pc still won't start.

Motherboard is getting power and can see the motherboard lights on, just nothing happens no fan spinning nothing and fans are plugged in.
My only guess is he needs a newer up to date power supply.

I try manually starting the pc bypassing the button, and still nothing.

Just want to make sure I'm right about the power supply before making him buy a new one because he needs this pc working by this weekend, and all local stores are sold out of power supplies.

the system should run without it but at lower usage iirc. Have you got another psu to test with? If you brought that one new refund it and buy another one.

Never mix modular cables. You might have fried the board doing that.

Not true. You can run an 8 pin AUX power with only a 4 pin connector but you cannot run either an 8 or 4 pin AUX power with nothing connected at all.

Main Rig:-

Ryzen 7 3800X | Asus ROG Strix X570-F Gaming | 16GB Team Group Dark Pro 3600Mhz | Corsair MP600 1TB PCIe Gen 4 | Sapphire 5700 XT Pulse | Corsair H115i Platinum | WD Black 1TB | WD Green 4TB | EVGA SuperNOVA G3 650W | Asus TUF GT501 | Samsung C27HG70 1440p 144hz HDR FreeSync 2 | Ubuntu 20.04.2 LTS |

Server:-

Intel NUC running Server 2019 + Synology DSM218+ with 2 x 4TB Toshiba NAS Ready HDDs (RAID0)

ah misread it- thought he had the 4 pin but didn't have the extra 4 pin. My mistake lol.
