I am starting to find myself occasionally running into an issue where I have a reduced framerate when playing a game. But when I alt tab to a different program/window. The game starts playing at full/regular fps for my rig. Anyone else ever encounter this kind of problem before?

Isn't this because when your alt tabbed out of the game the gpu isnt rendering the game but the program which is running.

A couple of questions in case this is not the case.

-Are you running the game in fullscreen, bordered or borderless fullscreen.

-Are you using an ingame fps counter or an external software or something like steam overlay for the fps counter.

-Your PC specs and at least one example of a game fps while in the game and (while alt tabbed).

- Do you have one screen or two monitors (only asking since you stating that the fps is lower can only be seen if you have a second monitor, while alt tabbed.

-Is the fps your experiencing currently lower than you have in the games and if so whats the fps difference from perviously.

No, what I mean is my game is running at a lower fps when I'm actively playing than when I am alt tabbed out of it

-Usually Borderless Fullscreen, but I've tried all three types and there is zero change

-I am using the fps counter that is bundled with the Geforce Program

-Ryzen 5 3600, Gtx1080, 16GB ddr4 3200mhz ram. The most recent example is Hearthstone, in game is just shy of 60, but when I am alt tabbed away/normally its 144 (The max refresh rate of my Dell S2417DG monitor)

-I have a second monitor, BenQ XL2411Z. The first Monitor I bought for my system when I built it back in 2014

I should add this appears to be an intermittent problem, this is my second time experiencing it. The first was a week or two ago when I was playing Path of Exile. Though that time there wasn't a major FPS difference, but a noticeable stutter was present.
