Budget (including currency): $500 USD (flexible)

Country: United States

Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Minecraft and some python scripting

Other details: A friend of mine recently gave me a desktop to take apart/ resemble for practice with handling/ building a PC. I have completely disassembled and reassembled the machine and successfully installed windows as the OS. I am now looking to upgrade it. These are the current specs:

CPU: Intel i5-2400 @ 3.1GHz

Ram: 16GB

Storage: Seagate 500GB HDD

Motherboard: hp 1497

What I'm wanting is a motherboard that has HDMI output/ at least one USB 3.0 slot (as this current board only has VGA and USB 2.0). Ideally the new board would be able to use the current processor/RAM/storage to cut on some cost.

I would also like a GPU/graphics card but don't know what to look for as far as they go.

Any suggestions?

I would say this is a decent build which would be pretty well suited to your needs (i know its 50 over but i f you go down a notch the performance plunges- i have gone for 240gb ssd as that should be enough space for windows minecraft and a few other games- you can always spend 50 bucks later down the line on a 2tb hdd . This is good for now and you could also defiantly play some decent aaa games on the 580 on high-medium settings. I would suggest spending a little bit more on a 3100 or 3300x and a similar priced amd mobo as it will give you a performance boost in multi-tasking.

@Ed-petit I'd add more ssd storage. Probably a 500gb drive should be good. Other than that, I like the build. Probably what I would have suggested to the op. Just add more ssd storage and maybe slap on some case fans.

yeah i would suggest just going with my build above and starting again and keeping the ram from the other build if its ddr4. if he does op could maybe go for a 1660 super but isn't needed for his use case.

I wouldn't touch that CPU.

It's a horrible value with everything else that AMD is offering

Few thoughts on your build:

Go with ryzen 5 2600 because of the bios thing, and to save money, go ryzen 5 2600

Go with a gigabyte b450 board for the motherboard

GTX 1660 s for the video card.

Where is the case in your build?

Why B450? Which board? Why the 2600? The price difference is minimal for a much better chip

Case can be had by reusing OPs old one or by spending another 30$.

How are you fitting a 1660 Super in there?

That board sucks, the SSD is low value/performance, and the 2600 costs too similar to the 3600.

You can't use DDR3 on modern boards

tbh, you are paying almost the same for a 3600, and that thing is barely better than a 1600af
