Bad sectors on a hdd (linux/windows)

Hello! I have a 500gb hdd with 22 bad sectors, im curious what windows or linux are doing to those bad sectors, will they just skip them or?

Bad sectors are handled by the drive firmware. It knows not to try and store data there, and uses a reserve sector to replace them (until it runs out of reserve). The OS basically doesn't need to know.

 

22 bad sectors is not a good sign; the drive should be replaced and not used for critical data.

22 is really bad. i have 1 and it freaks me out.

you can fix this issue by running the disk repair tool, windows will automatically skip those sectors and use the healthy ones.

i think you shouldn't use that hdd for anything but temporary backup.

I use it to backup games for 3-4 years and i had no problems, i was just curious what bad sectors mean.

bad sectors mean that the current sector cannot hold a good memory / permanently damage due to a physical or logical damage.

it's common in old magnetic hdd and it could spread like a cancer cell.

Then restart. Windows should take care of it.

If you still have trouble may want to replace the drive.

I dont have problems, i just know that i bought it from a dude 4 years ago for $12 he said it had 22 bad sectors but i didnt know what bad sectors are. Im still using it for games, its like 350 gigs/500 used.
