I like this setup but just realised I haven't included windows in the original post is there a way to meet the budget including the operating system?

480GB is more than enough solid state storage at your pricepoint. You can get a 1 or 2 TB HDD sometime in the future when you need more space for your games. If you want to save a little more, get a 240GB ssd and a HDD, or buy a used GPU, something like a GTX 1070 or RX590 if you can get a good price

Also, your lucky at the moment, the CPU, PSU and RAM pricing here is excellent :)

buy the key off ebay as mentioned above, then use another PC to make your own windows bootable with a thumbdrive you have lying around.

also I would get the ryzen 3 3300x instead of the 5 1600

i remember enough about the skylake i5s vs i7s that i'm not so convinced that it's the better choice.

I just updated the parts list to what has been recomended what about cooling do I need any case fans? also don't care about seeing inside the case or rgb i just want something that plays well and stays cool, picked the case because I started with a Linus youtube build and tweaked it so I knew it was more likely to fit and be compatable.

Best to throw in some case fans if possible. I just bought some bequiet pure wings 2. They dont move huge amounts of air, but they're quiet and good enough for most systems that wont be running particularly hot, like yours. They're also cheap, about a tenner each

the included fans should be enough, but you can get a couple more if you feel like it's not enough. you're paying too much for that case btw, you can get much better for less.

the fractal focus G mini gives you an extra fan and is around 45 pounds. also the MSI Pro-VDH saves you 5 pounds and is just as good.

thank you, do you know if I need to add anything for bluetooth, I have a preference for wireless periferals and playing platformers with an xbox remote.

you'll need a wifi+bluetooth usb or pci-e adapter for that.

Dont need the wifi card if you can use ethernet and a powerline adapter. And maybe go with a ryzen 3 3100 if you want to save more and if you can pay i bit more go for the 3300x. Anyway, great choice of parts for a first time builder!

the current cpu is actually cheaper than the 3300x, but looking at the 3100 which is more important for gaming core count or core clock?

the £13 is difference is negligable for this component

does it matter which slot the graphic card goes into as using the lower one gives more clearence for the airflow under the network adapter from what I can see

the bottom 16x slot runs slower, and the network adapter doesn't put out that much heat IIRC.
