Okay so it perplex me no vr head mounted displays never took off, I know they are expensive but so is most new tech.

I would think the convenience of being able to set a reasonable high res display on your head and have the absolute privacy that it brings,

would be a god send to couples or roommates living in small spaces, no glowing, monitors or tvs at night, just darkness so those around you can sleep, and no one looking over your shoulder.

So why are HMDs that could be cheaper because they dont need support vr not a thing.

I know about the old ones from when it was tried before the technology need was ready, but we have had the tech to make them good for a while now so why are they not a thing.

Pretty sure the cost would be about the same, since you still need the same type of panel and lenses, if you want a high quality HMD. And the resolution is still too low for e.g. reading small text in most cases.

Strapping a display to your head for extended periods of time also isn't very comfortable and you can't exactly share the experience with your partner. A good TV is probably a bigger priority for most. And if you don't want to disturb others during the night, just go to a separate room, close the door and use headphones. Which is also reasonably private.

depending on where you live a separate room isn't an option such as a small studio in Florida, or New York, etc... in my case Florida.

I see. In any case, HMDs wouldn't be much cheaper than VR headsets, since the panel and lenses are the majority of their cost. The only thing you can leave out would be the tracking sensors. If VR is a niche, a headset that can't do VR due to a lack of sensors would probably be even more so, even if it were $50 cheaper.
