Can't control D5 Pump with PWM header

I have a EK-Quantum Kinetic TBE 200 D5 PWM D-RGB - Plexi pump and I have been attempting to change the fan speed.... I have verified in my motherboard user manual and in the bios that the pump_fan header that it is plugged into is PWM. For awhile I could monitor the speed of the pump but could not change it. Now, after replugging it back in from when I tested a different header, I cannot even monitor the speed of the pump. The pump has always made a very high pitch noise and I want to lower the speed to avoid this. Thanks in advance!

Welcome to the Forums!

What motherboard do you have most will have the option to configure the fan/pump header for PWM or DC voltage control.

Which motherboard do you have?

I am not sure if the newer EKwb D5 pumps are the same as the older ones, but does it have a molex + fan header?

The pump should be powered by the molex, and PWM controlled by the fan-like header (only 2 wires, instead of 4).

Some motherboards also have the option for the headers to be DC or PWM controlled (and...Auto).

I have a MSI MPG X570 pro carbon. As I mentioned, I have already validated that it is a PWM header in the bios and even attempted to use a fan header that I changed from DC to PWM. And yes it has molex and a four pin fan connector (with only two cables for monitoring and speed control).

Okay, so the connections have not changed compared to my EKwb XRES D5 pump then.

It is recommended to use either the CPU_fan or water_pump headers, and they should be true PWM, and provide more precise control.

You have it on PWM mode -- good.

Did you also check what the fan curve is set to for that header in the BIOS?

On my Gigabyte board, I have something like this.

Fan speed control have be Silent - Normal - Full Speed - Manual (e.g. custom fan curve).

Assuming MSi have something similar.

Yup I have it on a custom fan curve. I ran through a few tests just to see if I could get the pump to lower/turn off by modifying the fan curve and it wouldn't work. I plugged in a PWM fan and was able to see the RPM and modify the speed on that so I know the header is still functioning. At this point I may RMA it, I thought I might have it in a DC header or one of the other issues. But the inability to change speed and the high pitched whine is making it unusable.

That's definitely not normal, must be something wrong with the PWM controller on the pump, EKWB should be able to get you a replacement pump no problem.

Did you RMA this pump? I'm having similar issues like this randomly on a new pump.

"There's no test like production!"
