Game Pitch

How would you guys be interested in a fun little FPS multiplayer game for LAN parties of up to 8 people? I'm currently working on it for me and my friends to play, but want to know if I should sell it on Steam or not. the price I'm thinking of right now is $5 CAD. It will start off with just a free for all mode, with more being added along the way!

That's a good point to bring up, actually. But I'm just an indie developer that doesn't have $10,000,000 dollars to blow on putting servers across the world.

A LAN only game with no online mp is unlikely to get any interest. Times have changed.

 

Might as well just implement P2P support with the option for custom servers. LAN support is a plus but there is no way you are going to convince people to buy a game that they can only play at LAN parties.

If that is the case, I think you should downsize your plans here. Just start tinkering around and make some demo games just for the sake of learning. The last thing you want is to get in over your head, especially if you are thinking of actually charging people. I think Steam is already overflowing with games made by people without enough experience or resources which often just leads to dropped development and lots of bad reviews.

Agreed. I can't see many people actually buying a game that is LAN only. People don't want to have to convince their friends to buy it as well just so they have someone to meet up with IRL to play the game.

 

But having LAN support is always a nice bonus in addition to online MP.

Peer to Peer, one player acts as the server and hosts the game. Issue is the host had a massive advantage and if they disconnect the game ends. Generally just not as good as dedicated servers. Though CoD4 used it and so did MW2. Though if the host left in MW2 the game would pause, find the best new host and continue the game with them as host.

Yeah, that was how this was going to work, but I didn’t know the actual name for it.
