Hello,

So I hunt this issue every once in awhile, haven't been able to figure it out in years, and the several tech forums I have asked weren't able to help me. Simply, my computer doesn't support a microphone. I plug it in, it detects it, but it doesn't play any sound. At this point, pretty sure its a hardware issue, but hoping someone here can offer suggestions. Sound otherwise works fine. (Also can't get volume to come through the headphones when also using the microphone.

Thanks everyone. :)

Have you tried using the microphone with something else? Have you tried using a different microphone with this computer? If you are plugging it into a combo port (headphone and microphone jack in one, usually found on the front of the computer), try plugging it into the microphone port on the back of the computer.

Yeah I use the same microphone across all of my devices, and have also plugged several different microphones into all of the ports on the computer. Tried updating, rolling back, and uninstalling related drivers. Nothing happens. Purchased splitters to plug it into a usb port instead and that didn't end up working either.

Have you tried using a bootable Linux USB to see if it works in Linux? If it does then the problem is most likely with windows, and reinstalling it should fix the problem.

I have not tried that, certainly will though thank you. Unsure if I have reinstalled windows since the issue. I just randomly look into fixing every couple years aha. Thank you.

If a USB adapter doesn't work that sounds like a software issue to me,
In reality a clean install of Windows should fix the issue, if not, you've got some reeeeal interesting stuff going on with your system.

I mean to be honest, I wouldn't be surprised if I had some interesting stuff going on with my system, its random lol. Is there anything I can do aside from reinstalling windows if it's a software issue? If not, at least I most likely know the cause, and can fix it another time.

Again, a USB adapter should run independently of onboard audio so if it doesn't work there's something wrong at an OS level most likely.
I can't make any promises but that's what it sounds like to me.
