Budget (including currency): gpu £200-£300, mobo etc £400-£500

Country: United Kingdom

Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: 1080p AAA gaming

Other details:

Current set up:

Case: aerocool streak

Mobo: asus f1a55m-le

Cpu: amd athlon ii x4 631

Cpu cooler: noctua NH-D9L

Ram: hyper x fury DDR3 1600Mhz (2x4gb)

Gpu: pulse rx 550 (2gb)

Psu: 500w seasonic core gold GC-500

"Monitor": 60hz 65" samsung tv

I see this as a 2 step upgrade path with the end view for nvidia 3000 series gpu, ryzen 4000 cpu and of course a proper monitor.

For now im looking at 1660 super, b550/x570, ryzen 3 3300x and ddr4 ram.

Im looking to buy in august-ish time so specific ram and mobo i would figure out later on

I can only really afford to make one of the upgrades at the moment (gpu or mobo, cpu and ram)

I would rather get the gpu first and hope when I look to upgrade the cpu the 4000 series is out but my fear is that my athlon ii x4 631 might not be up to scratch and the mobo being pci-e 2 that i wouldnt see the upgrade in performance.

Any advice?

Well your platform is actually so old that I think you should upgrade the platform first so you can run AAA games. It'll allow you to actually start and run games  be it at low VISUAL settings. It'll give you time to get the machine running and broken in before you ADD a gpu to it.

The rx 550 isn't great but it can hold you over while you do the hard part of the upgrade first then the easy part later

It makes no sense to buy the 3300x and 1660 Super now, only to upgrade again when the 3000/4000 series comes out. Why don't you just wait the few months and then buy once? It's summer anyway. Get outside and enjoy it.

I could reuse both of those in a pc for my kids but i do see your point, in a single use basis its not the smartest idea.

Yeah but isnt the gtx 1080 still a good gpu almost 4 years after it was introduced? I don't think the release of a new series changes the previous series very much.

Depends how you look at it. Yes, it's still a good card...but would you rather spend $400 and get a 2070, or 2080 level performance?

Waiting a couple months gets you the latter, buying now gets you the former.
