Should I Start Using Linux ?

Go to solution Solved by Deano727,

You don't sound rude :)

If I was you, I'd start out by trying to partition your drive (you only need like 20-40GB for the partition if you're not really going to install programs or save a bunch of files (you can make it whatever size you want) and installing Linux on there. this way, you still have access to Windows like you're used to but you can install and run Linux with no real down side and slowly get used to it until you're confident enough to switch to linux entirely. Also, you can keep installing different distros of Linux until you find one you like, just go for it!

Hi guys,

so, i have an old hp laptop it has i3 m350, 3gb ram and about 350gb 2.5" hdd (its hp g62 b02et but gpu isn't working).

Most of the time im just using chrome watching netflix or something in youtube and about 2-3 times in a month doing some excel stuff.

I guess it'll be better than win7 but i dont know anything about linux, which one sould i choose for the things i do and my native language is turkish will every os work in turkish/turkish keyboard.

Think about me like a grandpa using a laptop

thx, have a good day

Sounds like ChromeOS would be a better option.

I'd also throw in a $20 SSD regardless of what OS you put on it.

If you like to thinker around yes, but excel does not work on Linux (Desktop version, office 365 does works of course). There are of course alternatives. But if you don't want to put in some time to learn how to use it. I would not do it if I was you.

Gonna bet right now that if he is a "casual" Excel user, Google Sheets or the online Excel would be more than enough.

I agree, something like ChromeOS would be a WAY better choice for your needs. Excel would still be available through Office 365 as mentioned:

If you did want to specifically tinker with Linux, try one of the lightweight distros (Google search "lightweight linux distro" and read up on each of them, they each have pros and cons and you'll need to decide for yourself. DamnSmallLinux is a personal fav because you can literally run it off of a 4GB flashdrive and carry it around with you like a "secret PC"!

Office 365 web applications are almost the same as the desktop applications these days. But if you use a lot of hotkeys, you will have some troubles. And if you like to tinker. Try it out! If it does not work out for you, you could reinstall it always with windows again.
