Hi,

All my computer components have arrived for my new build, except my case. It has been delayed due to the virus and won't get here for about a week and a half. I am wondering if it is safe to build and just have no case, with everything on top of my motherboard box, until it arrives? I am expecting this to be a no lol, but I thought I'd see if there was anyway I don't have to keep waiting

Thanks

As long as you're careful with it and don't spill stuff on it, let a cat jump on it, whatever, yeah, it's totally safe.

I enjoy buying junk and sinking more money than it's worth into it to make it less junk.

@aisle9@GDRRileyThanks for the tips. I have no pets and don't eat near my computer so I should be fine. I am worried about static killing any components; is this an issue? And I am thinking I could cover it with a large plastic container upside down when I turn it off, to stop dust. My desk is also laminated wood so that should be fine

Thanks

That should not happen. Especially in just a just a week and half. There's no way it would short out from dust.

Yes it is.  Just make sure you have it so the video card is overhanging the edge of the box.  The video card won't be installable if the motherboard is sitting in the middle of the box (because of the video card bracket).  I have my Z490 Aorus master sitting open bench on the box that way right now (mainly because I can't be bothered installing it into my second case since I don't have anything but a crappy HDD and an old radeon r9 290x hooked up to it).  And of course keep any random metal things and liquids far away.

Dust won't do anything.  It's mainly only bad for airflow if it gets in vents or too much on fan blades, but an open bench that you are actually using alot could get less dusty than a case since you won't have fans sucking dust in.

In a week and a half? Unless you've got it outdoors in Arizona this time of year, dust won't be an issue. Just set it up on the motherboard box, place the GPU so that the little crevice in the box where the flap closes in acts as a ghetto expansion card bracket, make sure the PSU isn't physically in contact with the board and you're good.
