Is this a good build? I have never done this before, so I don't know so much about it as some of you guys out there.

I want to overclock, game, maybe some 3d modeling in the future. I haven't yet thought about my budget.

If you have to go AMD get it. If not get the cheapest out of the R9 280x and GTX 770. Identical performance. The rest looks good to me.

EDIT: R9 290 or GTX 780 are only overkill for 1080p gaming. If you do go for them same idea as the r9 280x and GTX 770

The 780 really isn't that overkill for 1080p as still some games barely run on Ultra on the 780

Hope I could help!

Sleeping dogs runs at 40-55fps on ultra/maxed out settings on 1080p with my 780. I hardly think it is overkill... Tomb raider barely runs over 70fps maxed again I say hardly overkill...

I guess 'overkill' can vary on person. In my opinion Ultra settings on those games is overkill, as it is not really necessary unless you want AA and stuff. I'm wondering what you would mean by overkill in terms of price and performance...

Overkill would be 200 fps on modern games. But even then one day games will advance far enough that it would barely run any game with any card. I see it more as future proof, as much as possible, better than barely cutting it today. Overkill would be buying a titan or two and expecting huge performance. Or 3-4 way sli.

Ok, so I pumped up my budget to around €1500 (thats around $2000) and came up with this:

  • ASUS Maximus VI Hero
  • Corsair RM Series 750W
  • Corsair Vengeance 16GB DDR3-1600 CL9 kit
  • Fractal Design Define R4 Window Black Pearl
  • Gigabyte GV-R929OC-4GD or ASUS GTX780-DC2OC-3GD5
  • Intel Core i7 4770K
  • LG GH24NS95
  • Noctua NH-U14S
  • Samsung 840 Evo 250GB
  • Seagate Barracuda 7200.14 2TB

I believe the NH-U14S fan might slightly overhang the 1st memory slot. Not an issue with two modules but would be with four. Consider memory modules that don't have tall heat sinks, e.g. Crucial Balistix Sport, Corsair Vegeance LP, Corsair XMS Classic, G.Skill Ares.

The RM-750 is a mediocre psu and on the large size for this system. Consider a psu in the 550W - 650W range.

Ok, thanks.

I have still one question. What do you recommend, the R9 290 or the GTX 780?

What kind of 3D modeling software are you planning on using? Are you planning on running much simulation add-ons like FEA or CFD? I know *most* modeling software takes a little better advantage of Cuda over Open CL. There is a reason the engineering world is hugely dominated by Quadro's and very few companies use FirePro's.

So, something has happened which has cut my budget significantly, so here is a new build. I am looking for the best Price to Performance ratio. Budget is around €700, but anything cheaper is always welcome.

  • AMD FX-6300
  • Zalman z11 plus
  • ASRock 970 Pro3 R2.0 (not sure about this one, suggestions are welcome)
  • ASUS GTX760-DC2OC-2GD5
  • Cooler Master Hyper 412S
  • Corsair CX500M
  • Crucial Ballistix Sport 8GB DDR3-1600 CL9 kit
  • LG GH24NS95
  • Seagate Barracuda 7200.14 2TB
  • (Samsung 840 EVO 250GB, not in my budget right now)

Also, I don't know about monitors so the suggestion window for those is open as well. icon_e_wink.gif

What country? Any particular places you intend to buy from?
