I am looking to add an SSD to my rig. I am running out of space with my 500GB WD Blue and felt the extra performance would be beneficial.

What would you recommend I buy as an ssd upgrade? I'm looking to spend $100-130 CAD and it would be used as a boot drive as well as storing current games and frequent applications I use.

I have looked around and have seen the samsung 840 (non pro) looks good for $99. Would I see a significant difference in real world applications when writing/reading from this drive compared to an 840 pro or Plextor M5Pro? Are these drives worth the $50 price difference for my situation?

Also hope to get some input from you guys/gals on this topic as well.

How would I go about getting my OS from my HDD to SSD? The way I was thinking of doing it is  backing up my programs to an external drive, reformatting the hard drive completely and then just doing a fresh install of windows 7.

Is there a better way of doing this?

Thank you so much in advance for anyone willing to help.

I just recently added a 840 to my computer and my boot time went from like 3 min to less than 30 seconds and all of my apps open up quickly. The main difference between the pro and the non pro is the write time and the fact that the non pro uses tlc flash which isn't as durable. If you write a lot to your os then the pro or the m5 is worth the money but if you use it as a os drive like I do then there is no real reason to spend more on a drive. For transferring os to the ssd you could use the software from samsung or third party software like true image, I would had done a clean install but some programs can only be reactivated by phone which is a pain, so I personally used true image to transfer my os from my hdd to my sdd.

My rig: i7 930 oc to 3.4 ghz, GA-X58A-UD3R, 6GB of ocz ram, antec nine hundred two, seasonic g 650, gigabyte 7970 OC, 120 GB Samsung 840, 1TB Seagate barracuda. Cm storm trigger mx browns and a steelseries sensei raw.

Thank you for the replies. It seems like the 840 might be the way to go unless I can scape up a little more cash for the M5Pro. At $128 -$15 gift card given it's performance I may just go for it.

So is there a proper to go about getting the OS from the HDD to the SSD? Would you say a fresh install is best?

I would personally go for fresh install to clear all bloated applications etcc..
