Hi there

I am planning to upgrade from two 1080P 60Hz to two 1440P 144Hz

At the moment i have an i7-4790K at stock speeds

and a 770 NVIDIA card

I am planing on upgrading to an 2070super or even wait for the 3000 series (maybe September?)

But my main question is:

Is my CPU still good enough to run this?

Because if i look at bottleneck stuff online they say it is not good and i should upgrade it as well but on forums some people say it is more then enough.

could you be so kind to help me out?

thanks in advance!

It might bottleneck a bit at 1080 144 as it does lack ipc count and you might get bad frame time but at 1440p for the most part you'll be fine

These old processors are still impressively good, in some thread heavy games you might be bottlenecked but otherwise you will be fine, your cpu is similar to an i3 10100 or even an R3 3100

You could experience slight stuttering due to the 4 core nature of the cpu but nothing too bad, just if you want to stream use NVENC

Main PC [The Rig of Theseus]:

CPU: i5-8600K @ 5.0 GHz | GPU: GTX 1660 | RAM: 16 GB DDR4 3000 MHz | Case: Lian Li PC-O11 Dynamic | PSU: Corsair RM 650i | SSD: Corsair MP510 480 GB |  HDD: 2x 6 TB WD Red| Motherboard: Gigabyte Z390 Aorus Pro | OS: Windows 11 Pro for Workstations

Secondary PC [Why did I bother]:

CPU: AMD Athlon 3000G | GPU: Vega 3 iGPU | RAM: 8 GB DDR4 3000 MHz | Case: Corsair 88R | PSU: Corsair VS 650 | SSD: WD Green M.2 SATA 120 GB | Motherboard: MSI A320M-A PRO MAX | OS: Windows 11 Pro for Workstations

Server [Solution in search of a problem]:

Model: HP DL360e Gen8 | CPU: 1x Xeon E5-2430L v1 | RAM: 12 GB DDR3 1066 MHz | SSD: Kingston A400 120 GB | OS: VMware ESXi 7

Server 2 electric boogaloo [A waste of electricity]:

Model: intel NUC NUC5CPYH | CPU: Celeron N3050 | RAM: 2GB DDR3L 1600 MHz | SSD: Kingston UV400 120 GB | OS: Debian Bullseye

Laptop:

Model: ThinkBook 14 Gen 2 AMD | CPU: Ryzen 7 4700U | RAM: 16 GB DDR4 3200 MHz | OS: Windows 11 Pro

Photography:

Cameras:

Full Frame digital: Sony α7

APS-C digital: Sony α100

Medium Format Film: Kodak Junior SIX-20

35mm Film:

Lenses:

Sony SAL-1870 18-70mm ƒ/3.5-5.6

Sony SAL-75300 75-300mm ƒ/4.5-5.6

Meike MK-50mm ƒ/1.7

PSA: No, I didn't waste all that money on computers, (except the main one) my server cost $40, the intel NUC was my old PC (although then it had 8GB of ram, I gave the bigger stick of ram to a person who really needed it), my laptop is used and the second PC is really cheap.

I like tinkering with computers and have a personal hatred towards phones and everything they represent (I daily drive an iPhone 7, or a 6, depends on which one works that day)

i'm gonna stop you right there. do you plan on playing on both monitors at the same time? (having a big black frame bang in the middle where the crosshair should be) if not, you don't need two 1440p144hz monitors, you just need one (maybe look into ultrawides), and you can keep one of your current monitors as the secondary one.

I agree with this

Maybe something like a 21:9 monitor heck even a 31:9 they exist 🤣 I'm not saying that it will be a good experience but for something like a super ultra wide you can go for that

2 monitors getting them synced up will be a night mare

If you mean 2 screens rendering one thing

Then don't functionality is better than looks

Thx all already for this crazy fast reply!

@boggy77 no i do plan to only game on 1. However i would like to have exactly the same screens just for the looks :)

most screens look the same. if you can, at least, get the second one from the same company (so that it looks the same), but 60hz or 75hz so you save some money.

@TofuHaroto no no i use two screens right now as the following:

1 screen to game

1 screen for discord, guides, excels for calculating stuff.

So only one screen is rendering the game

But i would like just for looks to have 2 screens looking the same because right now i do not have that and it is kind of itching my OCD

Oh my bad I misunderstood

Then do what @boggy77 said

Same company same looks and maybe save your money and get a 60 or a 75 for your secondary monitor

wait for 3000 series or upgrade now?

Simple

If you absolutely need a system rn go for it

If you can wait then wait and if ampere was expensive / it didn't meat your expectations then you can get Turing for cheaper
