and if you care about RTX performance, waiting for 30 series make more sense.

So I've had my current GPU (GTX 960) for well over 3 years now
and I am thinking of upgrading to RTX

So I was searching on NewEgg the other day and I found this RTX 2080S

I have an i7-6700 with 16GB @2133 MHz

My monitor is 1080p 60Hz but I am upgrading to a 1440p 144Hz in the near future
So I want to ask if my current CPU will bottleneck the GPU

*planning to upgrade to Ryzen*

That i7 6700 (or should I say the equivalent to a modern i3 10300) with the slow 16GB DDR4 2133 isn't able to feed an RTX 2080 type of a card.

I would not pair it with a card stronger than an RTX 2070. To be frank, it's great for RX 5600XT, 5700 and GTX 1660S, 1660Ti or RTX 2060/2060S.

If you plan to upgrade the platform soon, get the strongest card you can, but if you'll wait a few years to upgrade the CPU - then get an 5600XT, 5700 or RTX 2060.

No I am actually planning on upgrading monitor and CPU to Ryzen within a few months so I guess that's what you mean?

If you absolutely need the more cores and threads like today I suppose you can upgrade 

But if you can wait 

Getting something like a zen 3 ryzen 5 with it's improved ipc and imc and potentially a big improvement to the interconnect and waiting for ampere , then that will be well worth the wait

Then get the strongest card you can. Or wait for RTX 3000 or AMD big Navi.

Don't overthink the "i7" bottleneck, it will limit the performance (but still playable) till you upgrade to Ryzen 4000.
