What GPU should I buy for...

Hi all,

My GF is getting in to PC gaming (From console) - Rather than have her use my main rig she mostly uses my Alienware 17 R3

It has a 6700HQ and a GTX 965m.. So it's ok for many games, especially older ones at 1080p. But She'd like to start discovering newer titles that won't play well on such a low end GPU.

My solution would be the Graphics amplifier as it would save me building her a new rig, all I need is the amp + GPU.

Any GPU suggestions for 1080p gaming? At the moment 60hz is fine, but I'll dig out a 75hz monitor when I get a chance. Possibly upgrade to 144hz 1080p soon if she gets hooked.

I was thinking of an RX 580 as they can still be bought new in the UK for under 200£. Second hand is not an option due to COVID otherwise I would have bought a 1070 and called it a day..

Any helpful suggestions welcome :)

Bought my RX580 second hand for £155 a year ago on ebay. Great card for 1080p. You could buy second hand on ebay. Im sure most sellers would be happy enough to handle the product carefully, i.e washing hands or wearing gloves before sending. you could also wear gloves yourself when you get it and whilst you install it. Although im no expert, i think any risk of contraction are extremely minimal.

On the other hand if you want to buy new, new 580s are decent value, or alternatively you could get the  1650 super for a similar price and performance.

Hope this helps :)

Thanks, I can get the 1650s for less than a rx580, but I'm worried about the 4Gb Vram.. It just doesn't seem like much in this day and age..

I know that when I play warzone on my main rig it hits 7.8Gb Vram usage... (don't know what 1080p is like..)

So I'm wary of anything with less than 6Gb Vram for futureproofing..

For an old core i7, I would say try a gtx 1060, and if you are overclocking, you could go up to gtx 1070, but if you aren't overclocking, use a 1060.

True, 4gigs isnt very much. Perhaps look at the 1660 super then? Seems to available around £200 and you get 6gb vram.
