Question about RAID setting up

So watched Linus' latest vid about the Honey Badger, I know next to nothing about RAID when it comes to setting it up especially with multiple drives. Did they have a boot drive before using that RAID for testing or do they have to completely format every drive, set up RAID then change the BIOS options to RAID from AHCI then install windows again? (Also regarding AMD you have to manually install drivers in the windows setup too right?) Like whats the order that it has to be done?
