Gpu 2070 not recognized

okay guys the trouble I had before of my computer not posting after installing the RTX 2070 on x4 mode. Now I have the problem that the mobo recognizes that there is something running on 4x but the mobo can't tell its an RTX 2070. What kind of solution is there to fix this?

We need some background here. What mobo? What have you tried? Why are you running a 2070 at x4?

I'm confused.  Why not put the RTX2070 in the top pcix-16 slot to begin with and then install the drivers for the card?  That should do the trick for any of your video card problems.  Just put card in top slot and BANG!  All's good in the neighborhood.

Okay so this is from my other post on this forum called "I need help real bad". This is a z170 Classified k mobo I just had to test this rtx 2070 card I was gifted by a friend in which he had cut the gold traces on the gpu to run it at 8x and the solution i was given on the other post was to cut it further to make it run at 4x. See attached photo

OMG why would someone do this...? Also, no. Don't cut more to be a 4x. 8x is the minimum you would want... 4x would become a large bottle neck.

 

There are so many ways to have NOT done that, but I guess too late.... In the future... don't do that. Why was this even done?

 

Anyways.......................... If you plug it into a x16 slot it should still work. I think. At least assuming the traces are not mangled together from the cutting that as done and its shorting itself out.

Oh well this friend messed the 8x up so I had to use electrical tape to cut it down to 4x as suggested by someone on that other post. Okay so my problem now is that the whole system post and I can get all the way to windows. I look on the bios and the mobo identified that there's something on the 4x slot but does not seem to know what it is. I go into windows and I try to install the drivers and it gives me what the picture shows

Does GPU Z report it being a RTX 2070? Its possible it just won't communicate correctly anymore. I am not sure a GPU can get into 3D mode at only 4x. That may be the wrong terminology, but I have never heard of anyone trying this. It will run at 4x, thus all the mining mobos that existed, but I am not sure they actually identify correctly in that mode. Also, that was pre RTX cards, its possible RTX cards actually require 8x or more. This has gone beyond my knowledge and I am just guessing at this point.

 

See if GPU Z reports it correctly... If it does, you may have a shot at it working. The power cables are plugged in and those were at least not messed with?

I'm sorry but this should belong on r/techsupportgore.

 

Why would anyone do that... tbh I'd just write the GPU off, the likelihood of it working properly anymore is very low as remember, GPUs also pull up to 75w from the 16x PCIe slot, I don't think that'll be happening here

Also, I seriously need to know. Why the hell did someone do this. You can just cut the back of the 8x slot on the mobo... or use a PCIe extension cable. Or, like, literally anything else. Why would this be what someone resorted to...

this is what we call the wonders of the human mind.. the GPU is likely a goner at this point.. an RTX 2070 at that...

So.... yes and no. Theoretically, it could still work. But, in practice, yea I don't know if a 4x would.

 

GPU's do draw up to 75 watts from the pci slot, but they can make up for that pretty easily from the power plugs direct from the PSU. I am not saying this wasn't super dumb and may never work again. But, done right, theoretically it would work at 8x...

GPU Z. If it recognizes it as a 2070, there is hope. If it doesn't, your pretty SOL. There is nothing you can do with software to convince the hardware to work correctly if its let the magical smoke out.

No. GPU Z would recognize the GPU regardless of drivers being installed or not.

It is, but apparently he already chopped more off and now it only has x4 amount of pins.

Were about to experiment haha, do you own a soldering iron and some solder? We about to see if this is going to work and bring it back to life, its a dead card It wont read it. You have to do it right and be super careful and has to be super thin but it might work.

 

Or try to fix it with a pin from a used hard drive.
