Hello.

I have a Dell XPS 8300 that came with windows 7 activated and i have the disk OEM.

My original xps motherboard died so i changed to a gigabyte withought uninstalling the windows so now i have windows activated.

The problem is that i want to formate my computer with the disk that has original windows 7 but the new motherboard wont let it.

Is there a way to formate my computer with the oem that came with the pc when i bought it?

@Krist

I don't think you will be able to pull it off with teh OEM disk from Dell.   You may be able to use an standard windows .iso with the key on the computer though. Same thing, just without the dell drivers and junkware on the disk (you can download them from dell support).

I get what you are on about there. You will need drivers from Dell for devices not built into the motherboard, if any exists (for example TPM devices, card readers, bluetooth modules, etc.). You will get the rest from Intel or Gigabyte.

You should (99+% of the time) be able to just instal using a clean .iso and the serial key on your case (may be in the manual shipped with the PC). If the key refuses to activate over the network, then all you will need to do is dail up microsoft and go through the phone activation (this is sometimes needed when you are not using the same motherboard. Never yet have I had to talk to anything but the computer at microsoft, so take that into account).

Do you need help locating a clean iso of windows 7? And are you using a DVD-R(W) or a flashkey to do the install? (this will help us tell you how to go through with it, should you not know how already).

Do not activate windows during the install. If you activate windows within windows after you get all of your drivers and everything, you have a 30 day period to activate, you will not have to do the horrible phone activation. Also, do not use a Windows 7 image from a manufacturer, they are filled with bloatware. Just use a normal Windows 7 image, it is not illegal to download the .iso, it is only illegal to use a cracked version.

(OP, sorry for the OT).

What exactly do you find so horrible about phone activation? I've gone through it multiple times with several versions of windows (XP, Vista, and 7) and have never had an issue. It is as simple as calling the number, follow the prompts (I think it is something along the lines of english hold, or spanish oprima numero dos (escuse spelling).), then enter the number and it will give you numbers to enter. Takes maybe 2 minutes if that, and has yet to reject an activation that was not my failt (mistyping a number).

The positive or negative aside, chances are he will have to use the phone in either case (OEM license with a motherboard change).

Because, you don't have to do it, and it is easliy avoidable.

It is not a cookie cutter program. You can not always activate using the network (especially if you have moved motherboards quite often, or used the key on multiple systems before (even with a full edition key) Even with a key that will work, most of the time in these cases you have to use the phone system or it says the key is invalid). (Another case may be if you're activating in a location that has no network. This is uncommon, but it can happen).

With the case at hand, it will most likely work using the network. If not, it is a simple call to fix it.

You will need a DVD-r(w) and a .iso burner program, such as poweriso or freeisoburner.exe (just google them). Once the .iso has been downloaded, you will need to open it in the .iso burner that you choose, and then burn it to the disk. Burn speed is generally best to be the slowest possible (generally 2x).

Note the download links above are direct microsoft links. They are 64bit, and are the same links you get when you buy windows 7 online from microsoft.

Indeed. to be honest, with most things like this (data management), there are hundreds of programs out there, and we all have our preferences. poweriso is great, and allows for a trail period if my memory is right. imgburn should be good too (have not personally used it, but I trust your word on it).

@Kirst

Best of luck with your OS plans. If you need any further help, don't be afraid to ask.
