Hello, recently I've been getting into music production. So far I've been using my laptop that I've had for 8 years and it barely handles running the synthesisers and it is very laggy which is why I'm looking for an upgrade. Laptop is best for me because I need it to be portable.

Should I go straight for a MacBook or are there any better and maybe cheaper alternatives?

LTT's last video about the Dell XPS 2020 made me fall in love with it. Overall quality and performance it is the best choice for now. 🤩

Edit: if you're on a really tight budget you could by a 2013-2016 Macbook pro you can find something used for around 500$ and upgrade it's storage to an SSD. That's what I'm using right now, a mid 2012 Macbook pro with an intel SSD. It takes care of my ableton and adobe needs. But I'm definitely switching to the XPS 2020 asap.

My PC is a fast boyo:

6700K - 32GB - 1080 - 256GB EVO

Do NOT get an XPS. They still have DPC latency and thermal issues. Not to mention the battery is only rated for 300 cycles whereas most are rated for 1000 (the industry standard). The new XPS model are some of the most disappointing devices considering the price. They overheat and throttle, the battery only has 30% durability compared to the competition and the devices still suffer from latency issues.

You should be looking for Renoir based laptops. They're going to offer significantly better performance and efficiency. The Ryzen 9 4900HS beats all mobile core i9 models and uses half the power and produces MUCH less heat. Get an Asus Zephyrus G14/G15 and enjoy

I doubt LMG would recommend the XPS 2020 if 300 cycles was a problem and its not a problem lol. It's just fine even for professional use, alongside with the fact that some manufacturers who rate their batteries at 1000 cycles are overrating it by a lot.

You're trading a couple cycles of long lasting use and I quote: "You'll experience incredibly long battery life —up to 18 hours, 49 minutes* on a Full HD+ model when using when using productivity applications like Word or Excel or [...] using productivity apps or up to 8 hours and 27 minutes"

Edit: I've been producing music for a long time and the zephyrus is a good laptop and I'm a fan of Asus' but it won't serve him well (eg. Trackpad too small, no webcam for video calls or something and it's up to him but the design is a bit too gamery)
