Was surprised enough by this that I had to post it somewhere.

I bought an EVGA 2080 back when the cards first launched (think it might have been in 2018 iirc). The card has been solid, although over the past few weeks the fans would spin up periodically for a few seconds under load. I had some time today to take the card apart to investigate and I discovered that half the GPU die was practically bare. (see picture below)

I forgot to take a picture of the heat sink before I cleaned it up, but you could tell that someone (or a robot) at the factory missed the mark by an inch or so, and that the thermal paste just happened to squeeze over to cover some of the die when the heat sink was tightened down.

I guess I have myself to blame. This is the first card in a long time that I didn't take apart when I first purchased to make sure everything was proper, probably because of its hefty price tag. I've since applied some Noctua paste I had lying around and the card is quiet now.

EVGA have always been tight with their production in my experience, I own way too many things with their logo on it.

I’ve never taken a new card apart to put new paste on it, you shouldn’t have to do that no matter who the mfg is.
