Ethernet performance

Faded 2.0

Now with the current pandemic, I had to move back home from university but have to be stuck with my family's current internet speeds. Even before the current pandemic, the internet speeds have been terrible despite what we pay for. Our internet provider is Spectrum, and the speeds that we pay for are up to 200 Mbps, but on both Ethernet and WiFi we just barely get a download of 17.8 Mbps and an up of 3.37 Mbps. Our current setup is the standard modem that they provide (Hitron E31N2V1) and the router is a R7900 - Nighthawk X6 AC3000 Tri-Band. If there are any suggestions that I could do, it would be greatly appreciated!

What speeds do you ISP say you should get? I know you pay for "upto" but that is a maximum and each house will be different.

I work for an ISP in the UK and the upto speed is rarely achieved. If they say you should be expecting say 100-150mb, then get them to do line tests etc to check for faults. If no line faults then I would see about getting a new modem. The router is easily capable of 200mb so to me its either your distance from the ISP hardware, faulty line or faulty modem.

How are measuring those speeds? They almost sound like MB/s.

And what is the brand and model of that switch? could be a Fast Ethernet switch? (100Mbit)

I'm measuring it with speedtest website. The switch is a Monoprice 16 port unmanaged 10/100/1000 Mbps gigabit Ethernet switch.

What do you get when directly wired into the modem, and then the router?

I tried plugging straight into the modem but It didn't want to connect. But plugging the Ethernet into the router and doing a speed test I still got the same speeds just 1-2 mbps more (~18 mbps in total).

I don't understand the modem issue, it should be automatic.

Is the modem a router as well, like most from an ISP?  Can you test that Wifi signal?

no offence I am polish living in uk i moved about 2 years ago they only thing i hate about UK is internet , in East europe and germany you can get 500 down 500 up mb/s for about 10 pounds , here 60 mb/s is max as virgin lines are not realible in Grantham i tried virgin every few hours i had internet drop for other 2 hours ,
if you working in UK ISP , can you tell me please , what is going in this coutry and why UK is 10 years behaind Poland as in poland last time Ive seen RJ11 connectors is about 10 years ago , also when is comes to mobile networs  in East europe and germany you will get 99% of country coverage in 4g and unlimitd everything with 4gb roaming you have to pay about 8 pounds a month while in Uk to get this much you have to pay about 50 pounds a month i really want to know what is going on

Yep it really sucks over here. Things are improving as I have FTTP broadband and can have up to 910mb down now.

However most places in the UK only have FTTC which caps at 80. There is a product called G-Fast that is being rolled out in some places and it can be up to 150mb I believe, but not everywhere yet. The UK is way behind the rest of the world in terms of comms, it sucks. It doesn't help when idiots burn down the 5G masts, but that is another story!

For sure there is a fault somewhere then. Phone your ISP and have them do line tests etc. If they come back fine then the issue is the modem itself. Ask for a replacement. Here in the UK the modem and router are combined in 1 unit, but I know that isn't the case over in the USA.
